The Association began as part of the American tennis industry federation in 1974, but took its current form in 1994.

They represent the interests of companies in the tennis industry including, manufacturing, marketing, sales of tennis products and publications

They keep track of sales of tennis products which indicates the health of the sport, especially the sales of balls which they deem as the barometer for telling the popularity of the game of tennis
